No, if you are already receiving a Belgian retirement pension, you can no longer build up a bonus, nor can you build one up in another scheme.

Yes, you can build up this bonus if you postpone your retirement pension and continue to work.

Yes, you can. We determine the amount of your pension bonus on the basis of the number of career years in the general employee scheme.

Who cannot build up a pension bonus?

  • civil servants who can retire before the age of 60 (e.g. Belgian railways staff) or who are obliged to retire before the age of 60 (e.g. soldiers),
  • political mandataries,
  • people who work for a supranational or international organisation or who are associated with the Overseas Social Security,
  • people who have a privileged age limit (for civil servants only) and/or who are subject to different early retirement rules.

Please note: if one of the abovementioned situations applies to you, you can still build up a bonus as an employee, self-employed worker or civil servant if you postpone your pension until the general retirement date and continue to work after this date.

Which days are taken into account for the calculation of my bonus?

Every worked day:

  • after your earliest retirement date, but from 1 July 2024 at the earliest
  • until the day you retire, but until 31 December 2025 at the latest.

Some assimilated days:

Every twelve months, we can at most take 30 assimilated days into account for the bonus, on the condition that you effectively worked at least one day.

Please note: career break, landingsbanen (part-time work for people nearing the end of their careers) and Flemish care credit cannot be taken into account for the bonus.

How much is the pension bonus?

The amount of your pension bonus depends on the number of career years you have at your earliest retirement date. Every year that counts at least 104 worked or assimilated days is taken into account as a career year.

Career of fewer than 43 years

If you have fewer than 43 career years on your earliest retirement date and you continue to work full-time, you will build up the following bonus amounts per worked day:

Period Amount per full-time worked day (from 1.3.2026 at the index figure 183,17)
First 12 months 13,10 euros
Following months 26,19 euros

This means that if you could retire before 1 July 2024 but postponed your retirement and continue to work until 31 December 2025, you can build up a total pension bonus of 8 172,12 euros.

Career of 43 years or more

If you have 43 career years or more on your earliest retirement date and you continue to work full-time, you will build up the following bonus amount per worked day:

Period Amount per full-time worked day (from 1.3.2026 at the index figure 183,17)
For the full period between 1.7.2024 up to and including 31.12.2025 39,29 euros

This means that if you could retire before 1 July 2024 but postponed your retirement and continue to work full-time until 31 December 2025, you can build up a total pension bonus of 18 387,27 euros.

Gross is net

The pension bonus is a net amount. It is therefore not taxed if you live in Belgium.

You live abroad?

The pension bonus you build up in Belgium may be taxed in the country you live in. For more information, please contact the tax authorities of the country you live in.

How is it paid?

The bonus is paid once only.

You are entitled to a pension bonus? We will automatically calculate it when you retire. You therefore do not have to apply for the bonus.

When will you receive your pension bonus?

You retired before July 2025?

In 2025, we will only be able to calculate and pay your bonus in autumn because we first have to adapt our calculation programmes and await the confirmed career details. In other words: even if your pension takes effect at the start of 2025 and you built up a pension bonus in 2024, you will have to wait until the end of 2025 at the latest before you receive your bonus.

You retired in or after July 2025?

You will receive your pension bonus 6 months after the start of your retirement at the latest.

Why is there a waiting time?

  • We first have to know with certainty how many bonus days you effectively built up, up to and including your last working day.
  • To this end, we need the confirmed career details, which we receive every 3 months.

You will receive your pension amount immediately upon retiring, of course.

What happens to the bonus when you pass away?

  • If you already received the bonus before your passing, the entitled persons can keep the bonus.
  • If you are building up a bonus and pass away before your retirement, your entitled persons are not entitled to the bonus.
  • If you have already received your pension, but have not yet received the bonus, the entitled persons will receive your bonus.
