Indexation
What is an indexation?
An indexation entails that social benefits, such as pensions, are raised when prices go up.
Since 1971, the social benefits keep pace with the prices. Today, we use the health index to this end.
Whenever the health index reaches a certain limit, the pensions are raised. This limit is called the threshold index.
The threshold index is reached or exceeded?
We raise the pensions by 2%.
This raise is called an indexation.
You do not have to do anything. Upon an index increase, we will automatically take the necessary steps.
What changes?
- Since 1 July 2025, the pensions are raised in the third month following the month in which the threshold index was exceeded.
Example: if the threshold index is exceeded in February 2026, your gross pension will be raised by 2% in May 2026. - Limited increase in the case of 2 indexations (cash index):
In the case of 2 indexations, we apply the 2% raise to 2,000 euros gross at most. This is called the cash index.
This means that the increase for these 2 indexations amounts to 40 euros gross a month at most (2,000 x 2% = 40).
The cash index is applied:- to the 2nd indexation after 31 December 2025
- to the 1st indexation after 31 December 2027
- Limited increase for higher pensions:
From 1 July 2025 until 31 December 2029, the indexation depends on whether or not the total gross amount of your pension or pensions exceeds the limit of 5,286.17 euros gross.
This limit is indexed whenever the threshold index is exceeded. This means this limit is also raised every time.
This limitation only applies to the first five times the threshold index is exceeded within this period. As of the sixth time the threshold index is exceeded, the limitation no longer applies. - No indexation of the absolute maximum
From 1 July 2025 until 31 December 2029, the absolute maximum is no longer indexed. If within this period, the threshold index is exceeded more than five times, the absolute maximum will again be indexed as of the sixth time the threshold index is exceeded.
How much is the amount of the indexation I will receive upon the next indexation?
The raise you will receive depends on when the index is exceeded and on the total gross amount of your pension or pensions.
To calculate your index raise, we add up all your statutory pensions:
- all Belgian statutory retirement and survivor's pensions
- foreign, international and supranational statutory pensions
- overseas social security pensions
- parliamentary pensions
- supplementary pension benefit for Copernicus mandataries.
Click on the situation you find yourself in below:
My total gross pension falls below 2,000 euros gross a month.
The indexation of your pension(s) is not limited.
Your gross pension will automatically be raised by 2%.
My total gross pension exceeds 2,000 euros a month but falls below 5,286.17 euros.
The cash index is used for 2 indexations:
- upon the second indexation after 31 December 2025
- upon the first indexation after 31 December 2027
Example:
Dirk receives a gross pension of 2,500 euros a month.
Until now, he was entitled to a 2% raise of his total gross amount upon every indexation: 2,500 EUR x 2% = 2,550 EUR gross a month.
The cash index entails that, when the index is exceeded, he will now receive a 2% raise on 2,000 euros gross, but not on the remaining 500 euros: (2,000 euros x 2%) + 500 euros = 2,540 euros gross a month.
Good to know:
- Upon every indexation, your gross pension will automatically be raised by 2%, insofar as you do not exceed the limit of 5,182.63 euros.
- If you receive your pension for the first time in the month of an index raise, your raise will not be limited.
My total gross pension exceeds 5,286.17 euros a month but falls below 5,355.02 euros.
Your pension will be raised, but the increase will be limited to 5,391.91 euros gross.
Please note: if this raise exceeds the cash index of 40 euros gross at most, we limit the raise to 40 euros.
Example:
Sam receives a gross pension of 5,300 euros a month.
If we were to raise his pension by 2%, his pension would amount to 5,406 euros gross. We thus limit the increase to 5,391.91 euros gross.
But: because this raise (5,391.91 - 5,300 = 91.91) exceeds the cash index raise (40 euros gross at most), we limit his raise to 40 euros gross.
Good to know:
- If, from 1 July 2025 until 31 December 2029, the threshold index is exceeded more than five times, your raise will not be limited as of the sixth time the threshold index is exceeded.
- If you receive your pension for the first time in the month of an index raise, your raise will not be limited.
My total gross pension exceeds 5,355.02 euros a month but falls below the absolute maximum of 8,291.60 euros.
You will receive a flat-rate increase of 36.89 euros gross.
Example:
Nelly receives a gross pension of 6,000 euros a month.
This amount exceeds the limit of 5,355.02 euros gross.
Nelly, therefore, will receive a flat-rate increase of 36.89 euros gross. Her gross pension will thus amount to 6,036.89 euros a month.
Good to know:
- If, from 1 July 2025 until 31 December 2029, the threshold index is exceeded more than five times, your raise will not be limited as of the sixth time the threshold index is exceeded.
- If you receive your pension for the first time in the month of an index raise, your raise will not be limited.
My total gross pension equals the absolute maximum of 8,291.60 euros a month.
Your pension will not be raised when the threshold index is exceeded because the total of your pension(s) cannot exceed the absolute maximum.
The amount of the absolute maximum (8,291.60 euros gross a month) is no longer indexed from 1 July 2025 until 31 December 2029.
Example:
Pieter has an absolute maximum pension of 8,291.60 euros.
This amount will no longer be indexed until 31 December 2029.
Please note: If, from 1 July 2025 until 31 December 2029, the threshold index is exceeded more than five times, the absolute maximum will again be indexed as of the sixth time the threshold index is exceeded. In this case, you are also entitled to a raise.
