Periods during which one did not work – periods of career interruption

Career interruption was replaced by time credit in the private sector, but it still applies to contractual civil servants.

You are entitled to a free assimilation of 12 months at most during the course of your entire career, regardless the type or duration of your interruption.

There are two exceptions:

  • if you reduced your work regime by 20 % (1/5th), the interruption can be spread over 60 months.
  • the assimilation can be extended to 24 months if:
    • you reduce your work regime by 50 % (1/2);
      and
    • you receive an increased NEO benefit on the basis of diminished professional activities because of the birth or adoption of a 2nd or following child.

This period in which you did not work is taken into account:

  • to check whether or not you can retire early;
  • for your pension amount.

You cannot regularize additional periods of career interruption.
