The career fraction

The career fraction is the part of the reference pay we award for every admissible year for the calculation of your civil service pension. The career fraction thus is a part of the formula that is used for the calculation of your pension amount:

Pension amount = admissible services and periods X reference pay X career fraction

Which career fraction is used for my pension calculation?

Usually, we use the career fraction 1/60 for the calculation of the retirement pension for civil servants.

In the case of this career fraction, you reach a 'full pension amount' (this is the relative maximum of the pension amount, namely 3/4 of the reference pay) after 45 years in service.

We also apply this career fraction to your military service.

More advantageous career fractions

For some civil servants, there are more advantageous career fractions. In this way, you can reach a full pension sooner because:

• certain positions are considered to be more exhausting, dangerous or unhealthy (customs officers, postmen, ...);
• some civil servants have different age conditions (soldiers);
• it is sometimes impossible to reach a full career for the pension calculation on the basis of a normal career fraction (magistrates).
  
  

Which more advantageous career fractions exist?

• 1/55 for
  • non-university education staff;
  • non-driving staff of the Belgian railways.
• 1/50 for:
  • active services with services such as bpost, customs;
  • operational fire brigade members who directly take part in fire fighting;
  • operational integrated police executives;
  • active officers and NCO's (not for obligatory military service);
  • security officers (prisoner transport)
• 1/48 for the driving staff of the Belgian railways
• If you were born before 1 January 1957 and you were a civil servant before 1 January 2012, you maintain the more advantageous career fraction that was of application at the time: 1/35 or 1/30 in relation to the number of years of service for the magistrates of the Judicial Order, the Council of State and the Constitutional Court.
• 1/30 for:
  • members of the academic teaching staff and tenured academic staff of a university;
  • federal ombudsmen (if 12 years as an ombudsman)
• 1/25 for the first 15 years for the (assistant) district commissioners.
• 1/20 for:
  • Roman Catholic worship ministers (priests, bishops, ...);
  • members of Committee P and I.
• 1/12 for the first seven years for the (vice-)provincial governors.

For your years of service from 1 January 2012, all career fractions that are more advantageous than 1/48 are replaced by the career fraction 1/48.
